THE PROJECT:

Steve Sinnott has been responsible for the restoration of thousands of heritage tiling in the UK and takes great pride in his work. There are many factors to consider when installing Victorian Geometric Encaustic Tiles. With his 40 years of experience, Steve has come across all sorts of problems and is adept at solving them.

A customer contacted Steve to restore the flooring on an Edwardian home in St Helens, Merseyside, England. As with all his other projects, Steve used the top-notch sealer, STAIN-PROOF Premium Impregnating Sealer, formerly known as STAIN-PROOF ORIGINAL™, to compliment his top-notch workmanship.

THE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent stain protection especially against food
  • Sealer needs to withstand the heavy foot traffic
  • Surface is easier to clean and looks good for longer
  • Long lasting protection

THE STAIN-PROOF® SOLUTION:

Victorian encaustic tile are aesthetically pleasing, but they can be very costly to install and maintain. These tiles are very porous, meaning that any liquid left on the surface will quickly be absorbed into the material. If left unprotected, the tiles can look horrible in a short period of time after installation.

Topical coatings are not an option, as they do not let the tiles to breathe. If the tiles could not breathe, it can lead to shrinkage, heaving, or tenting, ruining the surface.

A long lasting, breathable impregnating sealer must be used in order to protect the porous Victorian encaustic tiles. Steve used Premium Impregnating Sealer due to its superior oil and water repellence. Also, Premium Impregnating Sealer does not block the pores of the material, allowing water vapour to evaporate freely.

The sealer does not change the look of the material, so it will not interfere with the tile’s original colours. Moreover, Premium Impregnating Sealer does not change the slip resistance of the material.

Premium Impregnating Sealer comes with a 15-year warranty when the product is applied by an Accredited Applicator.

"I have found STAIN-PROOF products to be the best I have used over the last 40 years bar none; Premium Impregnating Sealer is the best sealer in my opinion for sealing Victorian tiles as it allows  the tile to breathe, the sealer doesn’t need to be stripped and re-applied like dwell-on sealers and oil and water borne spills are prevented from staining the tile surface."
